March 10 all for Tibet

March 10th marks the 51st anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising, when thousands of Tibetans in Lhasa, Tibet's capital, rose up against China's illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland. On this day, Tibetans and Tibet supporters worldwide will take to the streets to commemorate Tibetans' courageous resistance to Chinese rule and to demand freedom and justice for the Tibetan people. For helpful action materials and resources, go to: www.March10.org In recent days, Chinese security forces have launched a "Strike Hard" campaign in Lhasa and surrounding areas, reportedly arresting 500 people in an attempt to silence any voice of dissent in the lead up to March 10th. A journalist on a Chinese state-controlled tour in Lhasa described how the city is heavily militarized with as many Chinese armed troops as Buddhist pilgrims in the streets. Read the full article. However, in spite of China's brutal repression, there is a powerful new movement growing in Tibet. Tibetans – especially the younger generation – are finding new and creative ways to assert their identity and culture.
