http://www.filmforum.org The U.S. theatrical premiere of THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS, a documentary on the Tibetan freedom struggle, begins Wednesday, March 31, at the Film Forum in New York City. The film, which prominently features interviews with SFT's own Lhadon Tethong, was recently at the center of a controversy at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where screenings of two Chinese feature films were pulled by the Chinese government in protest of the festival's exhibition of THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS. This is the film the Chinese government doesn't want the world to see – so we need to PACK THE HOUSE and make sure the whole world sees it! If we can PACK THE HOUSE through opening weekend in New York, we can ensure this film is picked up and distributed widely in theaters across the U.S. and around the world. The film industry looks to Film Forum's box office results to determine how widely an independent film is picked up in the U.S.
3 simple ways you can help us PACK THE HOUSE! ***If you live in the New York area and would like to volunteer to distribute fliers and posters please contact Yvonne at yvonne@studentsforafreetibet. At SFT, we believe this is one of the most pertinent and revolutionary films on Tibet today. While many hundreds of introductory films on Tibet have been made, this is the first to address the complexity and nuance of the Tibetan freedom struggle and most importantly, to address these critical issues through the eyes of Tibetans themselves. It also includes a rare interview with one of the most important young figures of the Tibetan struggle today - Woeser - the Tibetan writer living in Beijing. At this moment Tenzing Sonam & Ritu Sarin are in Prague for the One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival where they will be receiving the Vaclav Havel human right award from Havel himself!
We hope you will see this incredible film and help us PACK THE HOUSE! Tendor, Tendolkar, Kate, Schuyler, Mary Kate, Lhadon and all of us here at SFT HQ More on the Film Directed by Tibetan filmmaker Tenzing Sonam and his partner, Ritu Sarin, THE SUN BEHIND THE CLOUDS compellingly updates the struggle for Tibetan independence by focusing upon the March 2008 demonstrations against Chinese rule, the largest ever since the 1959 take-over of that nation, and the split among Tibetans themselves regarding the most effective approach to Chinese intransigence. The Dalai Lama, living in exile in Northern India, is interviewed extensively during this turbulent period and given the opportunity to explicate his "Middle Way Approach", a compromise position essentially giving up the goal of Tibet's independence in exchange for cultural and social autonomy. A younger generation of Tibetans who are devoted to the Dalai Lama, but who nonetheless feel the Middle Way Approach is not working, appear in the film, detailing their position in favor of independence. This is the first film to show the Dalai Lama addressing the political complexity of the Tibet issue, both in his homeland and within the exile community.
