Dear ani Yeshe, I hope I can count on you to add your support to Nobel Peace Laureates and political activists Elie Wiesel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, dozens of other prominent figures—and the thousands of ICT supporters—who are speaking out and taking action to help the people of Tibet. Last year, protests began to sweep through Tibet in response to almost 50 years of Chinese oppression. And the harsh, sometimes brutal response from Chinese authorities is still being felt today. A security crackdown remains in place in much of Tibet and many of those Tibetans who were taken into custody are now coming to trial. A handful of death penalties have been handed down. Still, hundreds of Tibetans who disappeared during the most tumultuous days remain completely unaccounted for since last year's protests. Sangye Lhamo, a 26 year old nun from Dragkar nunnery, was detained last year on May 28 for distributing leaflets during a peaceful protest. More than a year later she is still being held without access to family visitation or legal representation. Internationally as well, the Chinese government has intensified its anti-Dalai Lama campaign and is working to block his meetings with political leaders, even while it has placed Tibet on the top of its own agenda with foreign governments. There has never been a more important time for the international community to understand China's true intentions in Tibet. ICT is dedicated to exposing the truth and to magnifying the voices of Tibetans in this urgent time of need, but we can’t do it without you. Your support strengthens our best efforts and provides the clout and resources to end the persecution of the Tibetan people and restore their fundamental freedoms. In a very real way, you are standing with us in our advocacy work.
